Roofing/Shingles

Columbus Exteriors can obtain and install roofing products from any major manufacturer including the following:
  • CertainTeed - CertainTeed.com
  • Owens Corning - OwensCorning.com
Wayzata Village Apartments - featuring a product from Classic Products called Timbercreek Shakes which is a steel shake which replaces the old mansard roofs. Columbus Exteriors is your roofing expert! We do all kinds of roofs including asphalt shingles, flat roofs and steel roofs.

Columbus Exteriors is licensed, bonded and insured. Since being in business since 1976. We have developed a sparkling reputation and have numerous references. We know and comply with local building codes and most likely have already worked in your city. Our written estimates let you know exactly how much the project will cost, including an accurate description of the work to be performed.

Your roof is a series of components that work together. We can tell you as much or as little as you want to know about roofing components. Our experience helps us know how to protect your home from accidental damage during remodeling. We thoroughly inspect your roof including flashing chimney, soil stacks, other roof penetrations, deck, and attic. We check existing ventilation for proper circulation. This is important because improper ventilation will damage your shingles and can invalidate your manufacturer's warranty and cause problems with humidity and mold. We apply additional waterproofing underlayment to the wood deck if needed due to conditions of ice damming, wind-driven rain, or collected or flowing water.

Shingles are applied according to manufacturer's specifications with proper fastening techniques. That means four fasteners for each shingle - six in high wind areas. Fasteners penetrate 3/4" into the deck.

We supervise the job during all phases of work and inspect it completely when finished. We're not finished until we thoroughly clean up your roof and around your house, remove all surplus material and leave your yard in the same shape than when we started the project.

We'll explain both the workmanship and manufacturer's warranty and you can even review most product warranties right on our web site!

If you have a problem you can call us and either we'll help you or direct you to who you need to contact. Additional warranty coverage may be available. Owens Corning offers a System Advantage™ Warranty, providing enhanced coverage when a complete Owens Corning Roofing System is installed.

We use quality roofing materials. We use only name brands with proper UL fire and wind resistance ratings.

When to consider re-roofing

Leaks
A leak(s), of course, is the most obvious clue that your roof needs some attention. Leaks can be caused by a variety of reasons, including ice dams, shingle blow-off or improperly installed or deteriorated flashing. Don't just look for a drip coming from the ceiling, though. Signs of moisture also include discolored spots on the wall, loose wallpaper, peeling paint on the ceiling or a damp smell in a hallway or room.

Ice dams
Repeated exposure to ice dams can damage your home permanently. Build-ups of ice and snow at the eaves, ice dams are formed when escaping attic heat melts snow at the ridge or peak of the roof. The meltwater seeps down the roof under the snow and refreezes at the eaves, which are colder. Some of the trapped water can seep through the roof, damaging shingles, the roof deck, even your home's interior.

Ice dams are actually caused by poor attic ventilation. If ice dams plague your home, consider applying a waterproofing shingle underlayment when you re-roof. Then be sure to increase ventilation.

Update your home's appearance
Even if you're not experiencing specific problems, you might decide to re-roof your home. Maybe a neighbor's re-roofing job has impressed you, or maybe you're simply trying to give your house a face-lift.

When CertainTeed introduced laminated shingles in the 1960s, we ushered in the concept of roofing as a design element versus protection only. Add a dimensional look to your roof through the use of layering, shadow lines or intricate blends of colors. Or, achieve the look of natural slate or wood shakes.

A roof is much more than just shingles. When you replace your roof, be aware that it is a system of integrated parts:

  • shingles
  • felt or shingle underlayment
  • ventilation
  • insulation
Working in unison, these elements can provide maximum performance and efficiency. Shingles by themselves may look nice, but without considering the whole package, you could be looking at major roof or attic problems down the road.
